Which materials are commonly used to make duplex hex bars? What are their respective strengths and weaknesses?

From fasteners and fittings to wall mounts, car parts, and ornamental applications, the industrial uses of these bars are immense. A duplex hex bar comprises austenite and ferrite grades of stainless steel, using chromium, nickel, and molybdenum to deliver strength and durability. These versatile bars can handle impact and high temperatures in structural roles.

The standard production material is Grade 2205, delivering flexibility and low maintenance. However, UNS S31803 hex bars can be hard to machine and are not immune to stress-corrosion cracking in chloride-rich environments.

In contrast, super-duplex material offers more strength and resilience. But ASTM A276 S32760 hex bars are more expensive and challenging to fabricate.

Lean duplex material (lower chromium and nickel content) can also provide excellent mechanical properties.

How do you properly clean and maintain a duplex hex bar to ensure longevity and performance?

A significant benefit of a DSS 2205 hex bar is resistance to corrosion and sustainable performance in oil & gas and chemical processing. However, it can suffer from dirt deposits, fingerprints, scratches, discolouration, etc., with prolonged use.

Basic cleaning is as straightforward as using hot water for rinsing and non-abrasive chemical solvents for degreasing. Commercial detergents, hydrocarbon solvents, and isopropyl alcohol work well with DIN 1.4462 hexagon bars.

More intensive cleaning uses metal polishing (chrome) and passivation. We recommend replacing an irreparable ASTM A479 DIN 1.4462 hex bar to avoid compromising performance.

What is electrochemical testing? How is it used to evaluate the corrosion resistance of duplex hex bars?

Reliable corrosion resistance is crucial for construction, infrastructure, and other applications exposed to harsh conditions. Non-destructive electrochemical tests on a duplex steel hex bar calculate corrosion and passivation rates of steel (Tafel plot).

The usual approach is to apply external current to an ASTM A276 DSS hex bar, generating electrochemical potential vs current data. Alternatively, the measurements can use the free corrosion potential without an external current.

Ultrasonic examination and a scanning electron microscope can also check the corrosion properties of duplex steel UNS 2205 hexagon bars.
