This highly coveted type of stainless steel has a microstructure of austenitic and ferritic grades. The chemical composition of super duplex pipe fittings includes iron with chromium, nickel, and molybdenum. Unlike duplex, this material has higher chromium content (25%) to improve pitting corrosion resistance. Grade 2507 (7% nickel) is the most widely used material for a super duplex SMO 254 buttweld fitting.

While selecting these products for your application, we recommend ensuring compatibility with environmental conditions like temperature and corrosive agents. A super duplex tee can handle a range of temperatures and abrasive agents while exhibiting strength and toughness. However, it involves higher costs and more challenging machining than many other alternatives.

How do the strength and durability of super duplex fittings compare to other materials?

The standout characteristic of super duplex fittings is their top-notch strength, durability, and corrosion resistance in demanding conditions. These products also include nitrogen to stabilise the austenite effect from nickel.

A super duplex pipe bend shows impressive tensile and yield strength: 770 MPa and 550 MPa. It is more powerful (over twice as strong) and durable than conventional stainless steel. Some comparable materials with better metallurgical properties are nickel and titanium alloys.

Another advantage of a super duplex stainless steel stub end is that the product walls can be thinner, lowering the weight and overall costs without compromising the robustness.

Can super duplex fittings be used in high-temperature and corrosive environments?

The temperature range of an SDSS end cap and similar fittings is exemplary: from -50 to 300°C. They retain properties like toughness and strength at extreme temperatures up to 316°C or 600° F. However, prolonged exposure to steeper conditions will impact the mechanical and chemical properties and trigger embrittlement.

A super duplex elbow can resist oxidation and corrosive attacks from non-oxidising acids, alkalis, sulfides, and chlorides. Its PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) value is greater than 40.
