What are Titanium Circles/ Rings/ Forgings (Grade 2 & 5)?

These high-strength structural components can resist most abrasives, including chlorides and seawater. Titanium circles may use either Grade 2 or 5, but the latter has enhanced strength. It is due to aluminium and vanadium (6 and 4%) in the composition. In contrast, Ti Gr 2 rings use commercially pure titanium (99.2%).

These components are classic picks for highly corrosive environments like chemical processing plants, pollution stack liners, reaction vessels, and industrial scrubbers. Ti Grade 5 circles are also excellent for aircraft hydraulic systems and spacecraft.

The prime advantage of titanium grade 2 forging is its incomparable resistance to harsh agents – from formic acids and brine to wet chloride, seawater, and hypochlorite. It can resist both general corrosion and stress-corrosion cracking. Another distinct benefit of using Ti Gr2 circles is their excellent strength-to-weight ratio.

What are the key properties of titanium circles/rings/forgings?

The defence and aerospace sectors liberally use these products for their toughness and resistance to erosion. Titanium is amenable to forging, i.e., creating desired shapes through compressive forces, because of its beta phase. UNS R50400 DIN 3.7035 forging supports heat treatment and welding without losing its coveted strength and other properties.

  • This lightweight material has a density of just 4.5 g/cm3, much lower than steel but more than aluminium.
  • The hardness of ASME SB265 Ti alloy Gr5 rings is around 41 HRC. Grade 2 material is also tough at around 80 HRB.
  • These forgings have a high melting point of 1632 to 1665°C, Grade 2 being higher.
  • Due to its heat-transfer capabilities, titanium rings perform efficiently in heat exchangers and evaporators.
