Titanium (Ti), renowned for brilliant strength, corrosion resistance, and bio-compatibility, is an impressive choice for aerospace, biomedicine, manufacturing, and automotive applications. Titanium Grade 5 pipe fittings comprise 90% titanium with aluminium (6% to stabilise the alpha phase) and vanadium (4% for the beta phase).

This popular grade is also used for buttweld fittings, like a Titanium Grade 5 elbow, to manage fluid direction. Chemical processing, sporting, and military sectors also use ASTM B363 WPT5 buttweld fittings like tees, reducers, and pipe caps.

What is the corrosion resistance of titanium grade 5 fittings? How does it compare to other grades?

This material, also called Ti-6Al-4V, shows admirable resistance to corrosion with a rating of 4 (on a 0-5 scale) and high-temperature tolerance. A Titanium Grade 5 stub end resists neutral chloride solutions at elevated temperatures. Its resilience is better than Grades 1-4, which can avoid crevice corrosion amid saltwater, chlorides, acids, etc., below 80°C.

However, Grade 7 (similar to Grade 2) shows the best corrosion resistance due to the addition of palladium.

A UNS R56400 cap is almost immune to microbiologically influenced, galvanic, flow-induced and erosion-related corrosion. It also resists stress corrosion cracking more than many alternatives. However, a DIN 3.7165 tee may be susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement

How does titanium grade 5 compare to other grades in strength and durability?

Titanium has a high strength-to-weight ratio, and a Ti gr 5 reducer lives up to the legacy. Its tensile strength ranges from 880 to 1100 MPa.

Grade 5 gets deemed the workhorse, offering an ideal mix of strength, corrosion resistance, and formability. While an ASTM B363 ti gr 5 pipe bend is heat-treatable, it is not cold-formable like Grade 9. Another Ti alloy called Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al has comparable toughness, with a tensile strength of 970MPa.

Notably, Grade 4 titanium is considered the strongest among the commercially pure grades (1-4). ASME SB 363 WPT5 fittings manufacturers may stock over 30 grades of titanium and many alloys identified by their alloying elements.
